Lamayuru-Alchi (4 days)

1st Day: Lamayuru (3.450m) to Urshi (3.670m) via Prinkiti-La (3.720m), 7 hours
From the village with the famous monastery you cross a stream. After a gradually climbing across the mountain side you reach a small valley which follows as far as the first pass Prinkiti-La 3.720 m (12.140 ft). The pass is crossed after a gentle and short climb. Go down into a narrow gorge until reaching the village of Shilla. Cross the river over a bridge and then take the right bank as far as the next village Wanla. Wanla is a pretty village with a gompa high up on crag and makes a pleasant place to stop. Another 3 hours walking and you reach the village of Shills. Go along the Yapola river for another 2 hours until reaching the village Phanjila. From Phanjila go up the valley which goes off at right angles. Finally you reach the friendly village Urshi sits below a seemingly impenetrable wall of mountains. You pass the village and pitch your tent close to the pass.

2nd Day: Urshi (3.670m) to Tar (3.250m) via Tar-La (4.850 m), 8 hours
The path to the pass Tar-La 4.850 m (15.910 ft) is difficult. It takes you about 5 hours. Climbing down can pose a problem because of the difficult mass of fallen rocks. After a 3 hours descent you arrive at the village of Tar.

3rd Day: Tar (3.250m) to Mangyur (3.600m) via 2 passes (4.150 m/4.140 m), 5 hours
From the village of Tar the path goes up along the mountain side to the pass Hibiti-La 4.150 m (13.620 ft). From the pass there are sensational views of the Indus Valley and high snow-capped peaks. Luckily the easy path does not drop down that far before you reach the second pass Mangyu-La 4.140 m (13.580 ft). On this day you arrive in the attractive village Mangyur with a interesting monastery at the top of the village. Good campsites are near the stream beneath the village.

4th Day: Manggyur (3.600m) to Alchi (3.150m), 5 hours
Leaving Mang Gyu through a beautiful narrow valley you reach a small shrine and prayer flags. Don’t forget to look back at the impressive sharks fin of a mountain looming above the valley. After 2 hours you reach the village of Gera and pass Lardo 3 hours later. Finally you reach Alchi. The monastery here contains the most beautiful wall painting in Ladakh. About 2,5 hours back to Leh by Jeep.
