Tibet - What future? (English version) For 50 years the Tibetans have been trying to return to their homeland, which they were forced to leave in the wake of the Chinese invasion. Tibet has experienced enormous suffering: 1.2 million people killed, 6000 monuments destroyed. Today, Tibetans are a minority in their own country which is fast becoming a Chinese region. The Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile do not have independence from China as their objective, but rather, a ‘genuine autonomy’ within China. This political stands accepts the renunciation of independence, the condition which China demanded 30 years ago before talks could begin. To date, this project has not been realized. Meanwhile, the situation in Tibet is deteriorating: if nothing changes within the next few years, the real Tibet will vanish forever. This documentary, which was filmed in October 2008 in Dharamsala (India), gives the representatives of the Tibetan government in exile and non-government organizations leave to speak. It shows a complex and little known reality in which the official position, that pursues autonomy, clashes with the one striving for an independent Tibet. This creates a heated confrontation of strategies, both of which are based on non-violence. However, recent manifestations in Tibet have highlighted the growing difficulty of keeping anger, especially that of younger generation, under control. What future is in store for Tibet?
